dive dive dive!
man what an exhausting day. 4 dives - 2 of them wrecks... awesome.
the first dive of the day was a wreck - an old russian frigate over in cayman brac that was sold to the caymans by the cuban government. so surreal descending down into the water to be greated by this huge boat just sitting there at the bottom. the gun turretts on the bow and stern and the radio tower were the most impressive things for me - just seemed so completely out of place there. there's something bittersweet about wrecks to me. these huge man made objects - thousands of hours of blood sweat and tears that go into making them, manning them, sailing them - that for one reason or another meet their demise (violent or not) at the bottom of the ocean and then become the tombs for what they used to be and the seeding grounds for new marine life. i looked for evidence of what this ship used to be - something/anything written in russian. couldn't find it. the ocean - at least to my eyes - had made the ship completely her own.
the other 2 day dives were more of the same - deep blue, lots of marine life... got to spend time with benji and mini-me again, the 2 nassau groupers that let you help them hunt squirrelfish. this time they followed me and brian all the way back to the boat like lost puppies - so funny. we'd be swimming along and then stop and one of them would invariably rush up to us thinking that we'd spotted a squirrelfish.
4th dive of the day was another wreck dive this time closer to the resort and at night. never had the opportunity to dive a wreck at night before. the dive was fun (no pictures - my camera is piss-poor at taking decent underwater night shots) but there were too many people down there - 20 of us in all. the wreck itself was lit up like a disco with everyone's flashlights moving all over the place. that aside i was treated to the HUGEST parrotfish i've ever seen. 2 or 3 feet long and enormous - like some of the groupers or seabass i've seen. lots of little cleaner shrimp... a small octopus that darted away as soon as my light shined on it. really frikkin cool.
now after a couple of drinks it's time to turn in... been a long day.
